A student who refused to apologize to Hitler and was killed for it: Germany marks 100 years since the birth of Sophie Scholl, icon of resistance to fascism

(Beta-AP) - Germany today marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sophie Scholl, an icon of resistance to fascism, who as a student was a member of the secret association "White Rose", which fought against the Nazi regime with non-violent means.

She and several other members of the association were arrested in 1943 while throwing anti-war leaflets criticizing the regime of Adolf Hitler from the balcony of the University of Munich.

Sophie and her brother Hans were executed four days later because they refused to apologize.

Sophie Scholl, her brother and other members of the secret association who opposed the horrors of the National Socialist ideology are taught in German schools, but are also covered in German films and plays.

Today, in Munich, dozens of young people participated in a theatrical performance about the life of Shola, which was performed outdoors due to restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus.

Recent attempts by protesters against anti-pandemic measures in Germany to compare themselves to victims of Nazism, claiming that they feel like Sophie Scholl, have provoked outrage, as well as condemnation of politicians and organizations representing Holocaust survivors, including the International Auschwitz Committee.

Bavarian Governor Markus Soeder paid tribute to Solova on Friday, emphasizing that at the age of 21, she was ready to "sacrifice her life for freedom, for her attitude and for her conscience."
